Signed Emails

I got a personal email certificate from thawte this weekend.  I am not sure what made want this, but it is free.  For those that are not familiar with what a certificate does for you, it allows you to sign and encrypt your email.  Encryption is a nice feature that definitive has a purpose, but do people pay attention to a signed email?  A signed email assures the recipient of the email that the sender is who they purport to be.  Does anyone pay attention to this?  I am curious.  It really does not create a lot of work other than getting the certificate.I went a couple of extra steps after getting the certificate.  First a standard thawte certificate does not list your name in the common name attribute on the certificate.  To get your name in the certificate, you have to get your identity confirmed by some of thawte’s network of notaries.  It works off a point system.  I was able to get enough points from two notaries this weekend.  Then I went the extra step of actually generating my own private key with openssl which comes preinstalled on the mac.The reason for generating my own private and then generating a public key off of it is if thawte had s security breach, then someone could read my encrypted mail and send out encrypted mail posing as me.  I thought it was kind of cool to generate my own private key.  I followed the directions here

Update of My Life

As I mentioned in my earlier post about the blog software updates, it has been a long time since I have posted.  Anyway I wanted to give my blog readers an update on the biggest event since I have posted.  I proposed to my girlfriend Alicia and she accepted.  This is course means we are now getting married and are officially engaged!  We have set July 26 as the day which is coincidentally both our sisters’ birthdays.  I am very excited.  We had been dating for about 15 months when I popped the question. We have selected a location in the Dallas area called Grand Traditions.  They are Corinth which is kind of a drive for us, but we like their setup the best.  We wanted an all-inclusive place that could host both the ceremony and the reception.  There are only a few of them that were indoors in the Dallas area.  Grand Traditions had separate rooms for the ceremony and the reception, and we will be the only event going on.  Plus they allow us to bring our own alcohol which is both a money saver and let’s bring what we want.

New Favorite Coffee Drink

I have been a very dedicated Americano fan for a number of years.  I recently tried a new drink at my favorite coffee shop, Dunn Brothers here in Addison.  The drink is a iced coffee nirvana.  It consists of a cold-pressed coffee (more on this in a bit), milk, and vanilla syrup.  The drink does not pack the big caffeine punch like the Americano, but it has a great flavor.  I think cutting my caffeine consumption would be a good thing.  I decided that I could save quite a bit of money if I made it home instead of going to Starbucks during the the week.  It is a pain to brew espresso at home especially in the morning before work.  Dunn Brothers is not on the way to work so my visits were contained to the weekends.I did some research on cold-pressed coffee.  I found that the main producer of cold presses was a company named Toddy.  I ordered this, and I got it the next day.  It shipped from Houston.  I got a pound of Anniversary Blend beans from Dunn Brothers and brewed it.  After playing with the proportions a bit, I really enjoyed it so much so that I have been having several a day.  My savings is being more than offset by my increased consumption, but I should be drinking less of them once the newness wears off.My Dad is a big coffee drinker, and he also suffers from over production of stomach acid.  The cold-pressed coffee contains a lot less acid than traditional brewed coffee.  I figured it would make a good gift for him.  When I was talking to him on the phone, I asked him if he had ever had cold-pressed coffee.  He said no, but a fellow board of directors member of his old company had a company that made them.  He thought for a while and said the name of the guy was Todd Simpson and the company name was called Toddy.  What a coincidence!  His old company had started in Houston.  It is a small world.  I think I am going to get him a cold press for Christmas.  I hope he enjoys it.

Stuff Like This Makes Work Rough

We got this news today; Adobe is pulling the plug on the Send To FedEx Kinkos.  I worked a bunch of hours on it over late winter and early spring.  It is a bummer, but life does goes on.  It is funny since we just added two new app servers to the cluster for it. On a lighter note, I am taking next week off.  It has been quite a while since I have had this much time off.  I do not typically take a lot of vacation.  It is always nice to get it paid out when you leave a job.  Even with the bad news, I do not have happy feet yet.

Pressure On The NFL and Michael Vick’s Sponsors Is Working.

Check this article out. The NFL has ordered Michael Vick away from training camp. Nike has suspended his endorsement deal with them. Reebok has stopped selling his jersy. Kudos to all those who have contacted the NFL, Nike, and Reebok.

What A Horrible Way To Have An Outage

Can you oops, after reading this article?  How does a drunk employee manage to 40 racks of servers?  There has to be at least ten servers in each rack.  Wow is all I can say.  I did notice that netflix was down today.  This is the second or outage during the day that I have noticed.  They had one a few months ago.

Birkenstocks, A Symbol Of Change

I have definitely changed since I am was a teenager on a variety of fronts.  Some of the areas of change were my political views and my work ethic. My political views have become more centric or maybe I have stayed the same and the definitions have changed.  I think it is some of both.  I have definitely became more centric and less aligned with one party.  I used to be a member of the College Republicans and Young Conservatives of Texas.  I used to have a very derogatory view of environmentalism.  Wow, how I have changed.  I do not align with any one party and do consider myself somewhat of a libertarian, but I would not describe myself as one.  I also have a much better view of environmentalism.  I recycle and use wind-powered electrical generation. I try to consume less materials.  I do drive a Toyota Highlander so I could use some improvements.  I tend to dress pretty conservatively.  Most of my clothes come from Brooks-Brothers.  I decided a few years ago to break out of my hairstyle which was very straitlaced. It was the standard part across the forehead.  I decided that was way overdue for a change so I asked my hair stylist to make a change.  I was hesitant at first, but I soon decided that I liked it. He gave me a spiky on top style.  Last week I decided that I had had enough of my topsiders which I have been wearing a variety of styles for many years.  I decided that I would embrace the people that I used to make fun of.  I got a pair of of Birkenstocks.   It is kind of cliché, but I like them and think they make a good statement.  It is taking a little while to get used to wearing a sandal, but I do like them and think they are very comfortable.

Michael Vick Indicted For Dog Fighting

After reading this article it made me absolutely disgusted.  If any part of the indictment are true, then Vick and his cohorts deserve a lot more jail time than 6 six years.  The whole animal fighting “sport” is deplorable.  The laws in the US need to definitely be revised to make animal cruelty a lot harsher.  People who engage in this sort of behavior have definitely something wrong with them.  What would make you do this sort of thing.  It is so wrong and disgusting!I want to definitely point out that my favorite NFL columnist, Gary Myers is whole hardly for suspending Vick over this.  Check his column out here.  While Peter King who is the past has been for strong NFL player personal conduct is willing to look the way.  You can read his hypocrisy here.  I would encourage anyone who feels the same way to contact the NFL here: National Football League280 Park AvenueNew York, NY 10017
