News That Caught My Attention October 12
It’s Wednesday night, Alicia has gone to sleep. It’s funny we have some disparate sleeping habits. She’s definitely a morning person, and I am such a night owl. I am watching The Unit which is a really good TV series. It is a David Mamet creation. I have enjoyed a lot of his work like House of Games, Spanish Prisoner, and Glen Gary Glenross. I love my replaytv (Tivo competitor). I get to record the stuff I want to watch and then watch it one my schedule without commercials. I have to handle a production release tomorrow night. Unfortunately it lasts several hours so I will be up pretty late tomorrow night.
We are going to see a play on Friday at Second Thought which performs here in Addison. The play is called “The Glory of Living”. I am looking forward to seeing it. It will be my second play that I have seen by this company. I went to see “Humpty Dumpty” last year. I enjoyed their production. It is written by Eric Bogosian who is an artist that I really enjoy. Then on Saturday, we are going to drive down to Austin to go to the UT / Baylor game with Alicia’s sister and brother-in-law. I have not been a Longhorn game this year. On Sunday we will be doing more home organization. One of these days we will actually finish. I can only dream about the day.
There are a couple of news items that perked my interest. The first one started last week with Mark Foley. If you have not been following this, he is a congressman from Florida that has resigned after news got out that he had inappropriate contact with minors in the Congressional Page program. He is a member of the so-called family value party. There are also questions being raised if the Speaker of House, Dennis Hastert, knew about this and sat on it. What is interesting and bothersome is that Republicans are blaming Democrats for this. Some are blaming them for leaking this information. To me it is morally wrong to sit on information that someone is doing something illegal.
The second piece of news is a story in Usa Today. You can read it here. The gist is a lady libeled another lady in a blog. The defamed lady sued. The blogger did not show up in court so the court awarded a $11.3 million default judgment. She said “I don’t feel like I can express my opinions,” Bock says. “Only one side of the story was told in court. Nobody heard my side.” This is puzzling she would say this since she did not show up in court. Blogs are powerful pieces of communication, but you are not exempt from libel just because it is online.
